Prop 65: The Full Picture

California's Proposition 65 requires businesses to warn consumers when a product contains any of over 900 substances listed by the state — even in trace amounts that science doesn't consider harmful.

Here's the honest breakdown.

What Prop 65 Actually Is

Prop 65 was passed in California in 1986 with good intentions: give consumers the right to know about chemicals that may pose a risk. Today, the list includes over 900 substances — from industrial chemicals to naturally occurring compounds found in coffee, spinach, and whole grains.

If a product contains any listed substance above a very conservative threshold, California law requires a warning. That threshold is set at 1/1000th of the level shown to cause harm in scientific studies — an intentionally cautious standard.

The warning doesn't mean a product is dangerous. It means California requires disclosure.

Why This Product Has the Warning

This product contains whole-food ingredients — real fruits, vegetables, and plant-based compounds. Some of those natural ingredients contain trace levels of substances on the Prop 65 list, such as lead, which occurs naturally in soil and is absorbed by plants as they grow.

It's the same reason a bag of spinach, a cup of green tea, or a handful of almonds could technically require a Prop 65 warning.
